Tonight’s show will be hosted by Marjorie Farabee, Dir. of Wild Burro Affairs for Wild Horse Freedom Federation, Equine Mgr. of Todd Mission Ranch (TMR Rescue) & founder of Wild Burro Protection League.  Marjorie will be joined by special guests.

Wild burros are in real trouble.  In January of this year, Mojave County Supervisor Steve Moss called for issuing hunting licenses to shoot wild burros in Arizona.  His claims were that the burros were overpopulated based on aerial count done by the BLM.  But, is this true? Are they overpopulated?  We know the numbers are vastly inflated. We know the burros are not genetically healthy due to the fragmentation of their habitat.  We know that their ranges are severely over-grazed.  But, who is doing the damage? And, what are the guidelines the BLM should be following according to law?  Why do BLM employees routinely ignore the grazing guidelines they are supposed to uphold?

Listen tonight and find out.

Wild Horse Advocates Take On the BLM Over Release of Information

By Horsetalk.co.nz

“Unimpeded transparency of federal government agencies is the cornerstone of democracy,”

A wild horse advocacy group is backing three lawsuits challenging the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) over its treatment of requests for information.

The Wild Horse Freedom Federation alleges that the BLM has violated its duties under the Freedom of Information Act.

The federation says it is funding three lawsuits alleging breaches of duty by the BLM in respect of its responsibilities under the act.

The nonprofit group says the records sought are in connection with the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.

The vice-president and director of the federation, Debbie Coffey, is the plaintiff in the cases.

The lawsuits are pending in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington, DC…(CONTINUED)

Can wild horses co-exist with ranchers and their grazing cows?

Story by James McWilliams ~co-founder of The Daily Pitchfork ~ as published on The Pacific Standard

“Anytime a self-actualized journalist turns an inquisitive eye to the plight of our nation’s wild horses and burros it is time to celebrate as they are the ones who cannot speak for themselves.  But when editors, mostly unaware of the facts surrounding a story, cast a headline with skewed numbers/counts of said equine it instantly slants the story into the favor of the adversaries of the wild one before the first word of the article is ever read by John Q Public.  So is the case with the story below, written by animal journalist and co-founder of the Daily Pitchfork, James McWilliams.  James and Vickery Eckhoff have been champions for and of the truth regarding not only horse slaughter and the wild equines but animal agriculture in general.  We highly recommend the Daily Pitchfork and likewise ask you to read and visit the article below which features quotes from our own Debbie Coffey and a photo of our Carol Walker in the field documenting the disaster of mismanagement that goes by the name of BLM.  A very good read.” ~ R.T.

Terry Fitch of Wild Horse Freedom Federation at Palomino Valley

Terry Fitch of Wild Horse Freedom Federation at Palomino Valley

Twenty miles north of Reno, after casinos and strip malls yield to the high desert, the Bureau of Land Management holds 1,100 wild horses in a series of corrals. From the highway, the federal facility—the National Wild Horse and Burro Center at Palomino Valley—looks like a dusty feedlot, the kind of place you might smell before you see passing through some forlorn corner of Texas or Oklahoma.

But walk down the hill from Route 445 and stand alone among the pens as the sun rises in late July, and you’ll find that the place smells fine, sort of earthy and clean. Instead, what concentrates the mind is something altogether unexpected: silence. Somehow, amid 1,100 wild animals held in confinement, the only sound I hear is the wind whistling across the plastic lid of my coffee cup.

These horses and burros are a mere fraction of the roughly 45,000 kept in BLM holding facilities across the country. The primary reason they’re confined is the nearly 18,000 ranchers grazing an estimated 747,963 “animal units”—a bureaucratic term that can represent either a horse, a cow/calf pair, or five sheep—on 155 million acres of land. The horses might be silent, but lately these cattlemen have been quite loud indeed...(CONTINUED)

Tonight, our guest will be Gail Fagan, spokesperson for Help Alberta’s Wildies (HAW), a group of concerned Canadians who have been fighting to save the remaining wild horses, called “wildies,” in Alberta, Canada.  The Alberta government’s Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) is their equivalent of our Bureau of Land Management.

This group was founded by Darrell Glover, who flew over the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains and took aerial photos.  He was shocked at the loss of foals and yearlings he saw, yet last year, the Alberta government was going to capture and send to slaughter approximately 200 horses.  Glover exposed the lack of credible data by the ESRD.  The response from the public was amazing.  People volunteered, protested, camped out in -30 C weather, brought trailers full of hay, took bales on snowmobiles to the starving horses to draw them away from the traps. 5 people were arrested.  But in the end, only about 15 horses were taken.

Find out why things are so different this year, as another cull is currently taking place.  Could this happen here?

an additional note from Debbie _ this is where you can write to the Alberta government to let them know you won’t be spending your tourism dollars there since they are removing the wildies:
