Equine Advocates Called Upon to Distribute Pro-Horse PSA

Your Help Could Make the Difference

Equine welfare advocate, Frank Belardino, has produced a concise, audio Public Service Announcement (PSA) on the issue of horse slaughter to be distributed to radio stations across the country.  This is a simple yet dynamic opportunity for advocates to become involved and assist in getting the message out.

Please contact your local radio stations and politely request that they consider running our public service announcement.  If interested please find out the required run-time and format so that you can contact jo-claire@equinewelfarealliance.org AND ewa@equinewelfarealliance.org for further assistance.

We are a grassroots effort and the “win” on this issue will come from those 80% of Americans who oppose foreign owned horse slaughter plants coming to the United States.

That would be US!

  1. Good idea, and I’d be willing to contact my local stations, but since I’ve not done anything like this before, could you give more info to help people feel more confident in taking these steps?

  2. Here is some basic info for contacting the stations

A personal contact will work best when approaching the radio stations. Placing it on their FB page is fine, however may get lost, so be sure and follow up with a personal contact.

We need to know 2 primary pieces of information from the station; 1. their timing requirements for a 30 sec PSA and 2. their file format requirements If they require a copy of the 501c3 designation we can provide that as well.

This will be a joint project between EWA and Wild Horse Freedom Foundation (RT Fitch’s Org). WHFF will function as the 501c3 since EWA is a 501c4.

If the station wishes to speak with anyone for more information please give them my email address which is jo-claire@equinewelfarealliance.org and or my phone which is 276-970-5614.

  3. Jo-Claire: Why only radio stations — what about TV stations as well. I believe more support and interested individuals to add to our 80% would come from getting this on the TV stations as well. And, there is also trying to get an article in a large local newspaper. THe more public that gets to hear or see this would e xpand that 80% to a much greater figure. I would do what I could to help. What do you think?

  4. Hi Lynne,

Radio is our first venture, radio stations are more apt to run a no cost Public Service Announcement (PSA) than a television station. Our goal is to produce a TV PSA as well. The Children’s Letter Writing Project has been very successful in getting articles in local papers. This is the goal of Equine Welfare Alliance…to get the word out to the general public. The best way to do this is through radio PSA’s, newspaper articles, local TV spots.

We encourage every advocate to approach their local newspapers, radio and TV stations. We may not have the connection to get it on the MSM, but we will get the word out to the American People. This is truly a grassroots project, which will start in every advocates home town.

    • Jo-Claire, thank you for getting back to me. I have talked to, and he did an article in the Los Angeles Times on the horse auctions, with a small note regarding a sanctuary where I have my three saved horses. I’ve been trying to get him to do an article on the sanctuary as the general subject. I will call him and see if he would do an article in the L. A. TImes. Would you be willing to talk to him? Maybe R.T. could even help as R.T. is so knowledgeable about this issue. HE could either call you or you call him. Let me know if this would help? I wish I could take all the horses in feed lots, unfortunately, God didn’t let me win the Mega Lotto or I would be on my way to find a way to get them on land to be free and help close down auction houses where killer buyers stand in wait. R.T. would be the first I would contact to have started this. Hope you think this might help. I know this guy has superiors over him and they pushed him to do the article on the horses at a local auction house where people were taking their horses only to have many end up with despicable killer buyers.

  5. Having worked in the radio industry, I would suggest asking them to run it as a public service. Obviously PSA stands for Public Service Announcement, but if they feel it is a political ad it will not get aired. Make sure that you let them know it is for a non-profit, and it will benefit the community for it to be aired. Do not make any statement that indicates a political preference. Typically radio stations will want a wav file, as MP3 sounds terribly compressed when it is aired.

  6. This is a wonderful thing going on for our horses, This is going to get the word out to so many who are not aware of whats going on today with our horses, Im a huge supporter of anything and everything we can do to get this horrible thing stopped, I have been and will continue to get this out to every station I possibly can, getting the knowlege out to people is the first step in getting the support we need to end the slaughtering of our horses..

  7. we can supply which ever file type the station requires. So far they have asked for MP3

We can also provide the 501c3 designation letter if the station requires.

Lynne, if the LA Times wishes to interview someone, the best persons to interview would be John Holland with EWA and RT. Cover the domestic and the wild horses. Perhaps if you take the avenue of horse slaughter being a Community Killer and all of the ramifications, The environmental and social impacts crime rates, pollution etc.

    • Jo-Claire, thanks again for getting back to me. If I can get a hold of him and he wants to follow up, I would need to be able to contact, or have him contact R.T. I don’t have R.T.s number should the L.A. Times person want to talk to him. I will call him and see he I get him. I need to follow up on the sanctuary follow-up anyway.

  8. I sent an email to KTTS radio in Springfield MO asking them to run the PSA. Don Louzader of KTTS quickly replied saying they don’t run PSA’s, but would be interested in talking to someone on the anti horse slaughter side for one of their news reports. I’m going to ask Cynthia MacPherson (who spearheaded our effort in MO) if she will do this, but thought I’d also pass this on to RT and Jo Claire of EWA, maybe Mr. Louzader will listen to them also. Just a thought.
