Animal Lovers Gag on Horse Meat Proposal

Source: by Joel Allen of

Bellamy says horses are not like cows or pigs that are raised for the purpose of human consumption.

A proposed state law in Oklahoma is causing controversy all over the country.

The law would allow the slaughter of horses for human consumption and that’s something many American animal lovers can’t stomach.

If passed, the law would only allow horse meat to be sold for export to foreign markets.

Professional chef Thomas Mullally of Myrtle Beach has eaten and even cooked horse meat, when he was training to be a chef in Switzerland many years ago.

“I found the meat to be very similar,” Mullally said. “It was really hard for me to tell whether I was eating horse meat or beef.”

Horse meat is considered a delicacy in Europe, but Mullally says sensibilities are much different in this country, so he doesn’t expect it to show up on any menus around here.

“I’ve never seen it here in America and I think it’s going to be a long time before we do, if we do at all.”

If horse meat is never allowed for human consumption in the U.S., that would be just fine with Christina Bellamy, who owns  Tranquility Horse Farm near Conway.

She says for one thing, the process of horse slaughter is horrible. Sometimes the horses are shot in the head and don’t die on the first attempt.

“They can have their throat slit and none of those means are humane in any way,” Bellamy said.

Tranquility Farm rescues and rehabilitates horses that have been mistreated.

Bellamy says horses are not like cows or pigs that are raised for the purpose of human consumption. The animals that come to her farm are pets.

“We get attached to every horse here,” she said.

Bellamy says her opposition to human consumption of horse meat goes beyond the cruelty to horses. She says it’s also unsafe for humans.

“With the horses, some of the medications that we give them you can’t consume them as humans, they’re not approved.”

Bellamy says it all comes down to what society says is OK and in this country, many people saying eating horse meat is not OK.

She doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon.

“I think there are enough people like me out there, even a small farmer like us, that has a voice. When you put us all together, we’re pretty loud.”

  1. I am really sick of the horse pro slaughter groups and their lies. The pro slaughter groups do not care about the horses they only care about one thing $$$$$. It appears that the Government is being manipulated by AG big businesses and foreign interests. I want to know why is the Government (State & Federal) not listening to the American peoples’ wishes on this matter.

  2. Heres the thing 80% are against, horse slaughter , Why is 20% so powerful/////// I am also sick and tired of the Crazy talk, this is Disgusting and totally nauseating !!!! to say the LEAST !!!!! Wheres the Thank You for all you have given , without you we wouldnt be here and there is no doubt the horses are Natures beautiful Balance ?????????? Wheres the Allegiance??????????

    • Because the 20% have powerful
Rich lobbyists. We do not. And even tho the majority of the American people do not want horses slaughtered, that is not their primary concern in life. They do not spend time or money to ban it. There are just a relative few of us that are fighting the money loaded Corporate Greed. My opinion is the only thing that is standing between the pro slaughter people and success is the Obama Administration that has delayed approvals of USDA inspectors. And is now favoring the SAFE Act which is actually about the toxic horse meat not being fit for human consumption. I believe that we must back those bills and ask for a Presidential Executive Decision if we cannot get enough co sponsors.

  3. In Europe they wont be buying any horse meat from the USA , why.. because they found out that the meat is toxic to humans and dont want there kids and familys getting sick… this has got to stop… the slaughtering of horses for no reason other than money… when theres no market for horse meat ,why are they still slaughtering the horses…. this gov. is so money hungry theyll murder anything any more… and its horrible the way they slaughter the horses , they cut there throat and let them bleed out and there still alive , suffering so badly…. animal cruelty it what it is ….and I thought we had laws against animal abuse….

  4. Ok. You slaughter the horses in America.. Then ship them to Europe??
What state will the meat be in then, I fear rotted and unusable. I am in the UK- we don’t want your meat, we are able to steal, murder
And inhumanly treat our own horses thank you very much

Thoughts are with the millions of horses who will endure hours of torture ..

    • Thank you Victoria. I’m glad to see some weighing in from the other side of the water.I hope the EU follows through as well as the rest of the world and bans US horse meat because it IS full of toxic drugs. I can attest to this because i have 18 of these wonderful creatures and keep Bute, Menominee, worm medicines, etc. on hand and every one of mine has been treated with Bute at some time in their lives.. Horse slaughter is a nasty business and we don’t wasn’t it back here ever.

  5. I will never eat horsemeat in fact I am not eating beef now either as I don’t want to eat horsemeat and I heard it is mixed with beef NO THANKS Horses in America are not raised for food the things we have to give them are not for human consumption when is everyone going to wake up to the real facts its all about $$$$$$ and greed and they are not caring for the welfare of the horses. 😦 People need to take responsibility for their horses or don’t buy them also breeding has to stop for awhile.

  6. Signing this bill would be a grave mistake! The bill reeks of Comminism. That our own government would enact a law that would hide those who break our anti-cruelty laws IS UNCONSCIONABLE. “We The People have a right to know what happens in the production of our food. Have you seen the 1973 movie, “Soylent Green”?
I will be obtaining a list of every lawmaker who votes in favor of this law, and will publish this list on every form of media that is available to me. Then we will know who to VOTE OUT OF OFFICE come election day. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL NOT STAND FOR SUCH SUBTRIFUGE AND DECEPTION FROM OUR OWN GOVERNMENT

  7. What ever the Europeans want to do with their horses and equines is just fine. But in light of the recent problems it seems a good majority don’t want to eat horse meat either. We all need to help each other and Oklahoma has taken that away from us. Its just disgusting that they don’t care what any of the rest of us say. I hope they burn in Hell for signing of on this legislation. What a day to sign the language – Wasn’t it Good Friday?

  8. The Representatives you have in Oklahoma say they are making it less stressful for the horses if they are slaughtered there, then if they have to travel to Mexico or Canada. It seems to me that Oklahoma is in the middle of NOWHERE. From any part of the country, the Horses still have to travel from several hundred to thousands of miles to get to Oklahoma. So that arguement is not valid. A Famous American Humorist is an Oklahomian,Will Rodgers. If he was alive today,I do not think he would see any Humor in slaughtering horses in Oklahoma. I bet you he is turning over in his grave right now when he heard what is happenning to his beloved Horses. I will comment more about the miscarriage of Justice that is going to happen to these horses. My name is Dr. Lester Castro Friedlander,BA,DVM. I am a former New York Stste Horse Racing and Wagering Board Veterinarian and a Former USDA FSIS Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer and USDA Veterinary Trainer of the Year.

    • Thank You for your Comments, I know also Will Rogers is turning over in his grave he so loved the Horses , if he wasnt already dead , this would have surely killed him…………………OK it isnt only the horses you disrespect It is also Will Rogers memory the Horses he so Loved !!!!!

      • Thank you for your comments Dr. Lester Castro Friedlander DVM you are so right Oklahoma is in the middle of nowhere and they are saying it is less stressful for the horses if they are slaughtered there. You are so right their arguement is not valid! I sincerely hope that it never happens I also hate what is happening to our beloved American Horses. Horse slaughter has to be stopped somehow someday soon! It is cruel inhumane and disgusting! Needs to STOP!
