Last year, the federal appropriations bill for 2015 renewed a ban on the use of tax dollars for inspections of horse slaughterhouses, keeping the vile horse slaughter industry from operating anywhere in America… for a time.

This September, that ban expires, putting horse slaughter facilities once again in a position to potentially reemerge in America, and putting the burden on Congress to reinstate its temporary halt.

But while renewing the ban every year stops slaughterhouses from opening on U.S. soil, it cannot prevent American horses — approximately 150,000 every year — from being legally trucked to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada.

Even when horse slaughter plants were allowed in the U.S., tens of thousands of horses were still exported annually for slaughter, and several thousand were actually imported for slaughter.

During those long-distance trips, horses are treated as if they’re already dead, kept in crowded containers and denied adequate food, water, and rest. According to the USDA, 92 percent of these horses are in good physical condition and could go on to lead productive lives in loving homes.

Horse slaughter is also a threat to human health because horses are routinely given hundreds of drugs and other substances during their lives that have not been approved by the FDA for use in animals intended for human consumption…(CONTINUED)

  1. Every year the ugly subject of slaughter comes up. Our horses are being faced with betrayal, torture, brutality, and finally death in a slaughter house so that people over seas and in Canada and mexico can feast on their flesh and these rotten murderers here, including members of congress can profit from their deaths. Beware people because our previous mustangs, racing athletes, show horses, family pets are on the front lines being sold, stolen, taken by authorities and resold at auction destined for slaughter. Some if our own vets, congressmen and women are selling is and them out. Some of these so called rescues are no better. Trainers, breeders and the organizations they represent are no better. They support house slaughter. I no longer believe that people are ignorant of slaughter. Unlike us who have followed, fought, signed numerous petitions, written letters and phoned our representatives until we are blue in the face have not ended it. We are still too separated, making us weak and not with a mention in DC. We are separated by party lines. Separated by financial support. All the while, we are being taxed to death to support these big corporate organizations that are undermining all of our efforts. It’s like organizing a union. You just get people to stand united because everybody has their own agenda. I’ve been involved for many years (since 2001) and still there is little no difference. Dammed people in this country are too stupid, too complacent to care about these magnificent animals. As a matter of fact, they shouldn’t even vote.. Look at the records… I am disgusted with it all and have no faith in people in this country. Get it together people or you’ll continue beating your heads against the wall. Don’t blame Obama for I ills. He signed the bill to help the horses even though some of you continue to attack him. I’m sure he’s been lied to, kept in the dark, threatened by some of those that you support. Follow the money and where it’s gone. See who supports your own reps. See why they ignore us. See where we’ve failed these animals. Find way to stop shooting ourselves in the foot. We must be united as one large group. United we stand, divided we fall.

  2. This link might help some of us to find our senators and representatives so we can contact them. I sometimes think that writing letters/emails/calling doesn’t help but it is free, easy and it is our right as American citizens and the major point is that if we DON’T speak up, then the only people our officials will be hearing from are those with financial greed in their hearts.

  3. The business of horse slaughter is a grisly practice and it is now more urgent than ever that Congress continue the ban and prevent this cruel and environmentally devastating industry from establishing roots on U.S. soil. Contact your representative to vote YES in favor of the Farr Amendment to ban funding for horse slaughter. The threat to human health alone should be sufficient to ending this barbaric practice! Great links above…thank you everyone! (-:

  4. Folks the bottom line is that we CAN NEVER give up the fight! It always seems dark before the light. Pressure, Pressure, Pressure, is what is needed here. It’s heart breaking my friends tell me, I don’t want to think about, I don’t want to see it! Who the hell does!! My prayers go out to all the Angels who show up week after week at the auctions and the Kill Pens. I can stomach alot, but I went once. I cried all the way home because I felt useless because I didn’t own a farm, didn’t have the money to bail them all out. However, I made up mind I would always fight for them. I made sure that I made every committee meeting in Springfield, Illinois. I still have a picture of a mare and her foial who was saved by a,very compassionate USDA inspector who found her with the baby the next day on the Kill Fllor at Cavel, Int’l in 2007 because there was time to slaughter the day before. We thought that cancerous, low life Cavel would never leave the state of Illinois. It was hard, but each one of our group made sure to make the trip. This was the least I could do for our loving equines. Take a vacation day and go to your Legislators office. He or she may not be there, but their Staff is there to SERVE YOU!!! Hold their feet to the fire!! Don’t be shy, let them know that there is a face and a Horse(s) behind your name. Show them a picture of your Horse and tell them about horses being taken to make quotas. There will be a program and march in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 29th. If you can’t be there on that Tuesday coordinate the date so you are showing up on that date in their office. There is time for planning. Call your local news station and tell them you would like it covered. Also contact your local newspaper. Get together with many Horse people who feel the same way you do and sponsoir an outdoor sign. There are so many things you can do. Sponsor several classes at your local Horse show. Prepare a statement asking them to support the sponsors and the bill. Make copies of the bill off the internet. Remember everyone, these EQUINES are counting on us and we must STOP this MADNESS. Email the European Union too. I know that WE can get this done for the horses and other equines!!!
