Robert Redford, a life-long horse lover, has been publicly against equine slaughter for a long time – which is why we are so honored to have his support for this petition appealing to President Obama and Vice President Biden to end this cruel and unethical practice before they leave office.

Well frankly – Obama had better make hay while the sun shines – politics or no – there WILL be change – whether those of us on this blog like it or not.

The horse eaters are now in charge. The speaker just said, “relief is coming” for the ranchers being kept off grazing on public lands and miners laid off because of clean water, air & pollution regulations. The wild horses won’t have any positive “help” from federal, state or local governments. Our new president doesn’t even like any pets at all. I hope President Obama does a mandate but I doubt he will block an entire government of politicians who will open horse slaughter again.

Thank you Mr. Reford. The “speaker” may not have a job soon. Let’s try to have hope, a lot of what we’ve been told has been wrong so far. I voted Democrat, but I did have reservations in my heart of hearts.

I’m trying to keep an open mind – I have never seen more Democratic propaganda in my life than in this election. Trump’s sons could not serve in his Administration, I don’t think that kind of thing is allowed and is at least frowned upon, and they wouldn’t be approved by the Senate in any case; I don’t believe the wild scare tactics about who he will appoint as Interior Secretary (the Democrats haven’t been stellar in that area either). Even trying to promote President Obama as a “staunch ally” of America’s wildlife, when in truth unbiased reports show him as the worst since Bush, and he’s a Democrat! I truly believe he wasn’t knowledgeable about these things, after 8 years, he may have given this issue more attention. Sally Jewell, I hope has turned in her resignation. I don’t think Hillary is knowledgeable either. The childish, gremlin behavior and propaganda is still going on in the press after the election.

Ida, I expect DJT will put in place anyone he wants, regardless of protocol or appearances, as that is his modus operandi and Congress will not stand in his way on much of anything for the next two years I expect. I hope you are right but expect turbulence ahead for our wildlife and public lands.

Instead of slaughtering them can’t you sterilize them so it will slow down the reproduction. That way they don’t have to be slaughtered

Diana, this issue concerns all domestic and wild horses, and the industries which rely on a disposal pipeline for unwanted animals once they are used up. Sterilization isn’t in the cards for domestic animals since anyone can still raise stud colts and breed horses anywhere, any time. Wild horses are a more complex issue but sterilization won’t solve that problem either, and is in most cases illegal, and at a minimum is extremely risky and expensive. Populations are in many places considered below viable already, which is another concern. There’s lots to research on this so please investigate further!

We rescued two mares from the kill pen less than two weeks ago. One is a magnificent TB with beautiful movement and sweet disposition. Both mares are trained. Both mares came running up to the gate begging that they would be taken out of the place. They stood like statues in the trailer for ten hours on the way home. They are so appreciative they follow my daughter everywhere she goes like a dog. You cannot imagine the misery these poor animals are going through. We had to leave behind nearly a hundred more including a gelding whose owner went off to college and probably does not even know his faithful rodeo horse is in a kill pen headed for Mexico. There is a young woman who tries to find homes for the horses, researches their history and puts her heart into trying to ease their horrible suffering. It is so sad to me that I cannot bear to see their sad faces and I don’t know how she does it. Please don’t let this continue. It is barbaric and cruel.

And let us also remember exactly what a slaughterhouse looks like. Consider the account of someone who not long ago worked in one. This person was interviewed by investigators at a secret location, and the account was entered into the record of a meeting held by the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Mining of the Nevada state legislature on Marcy 29, 1999. As recounted in “Mustang,” here is part of the testimony:
I saw a lot of terrible things. When the colts come in, they’re not worth anything because they’re so small. So they hit them in the head and throw them in the gut pile.
I used to go into the corrals at night to be with the mares. They were still trying to take care of their young, like in the wild. Some of them got tangled up in the fences.
The most difficult thing for me to talk about was the time a heard a big ruckus and I looked down and there was this black wild stallion that they were trying to get up in the chute. But he knew what was coming. He reared. He turned around and tried to crawl over the top of the other hoses to get back down the chute. And, of course, man is always stronger and he is always going to figure out a way to get the job done because we’re talking about a dollar bill here … So they got all the crew out there. And they used the electric prods to prod him up …
And finally the guy on the kill floor came up, running upstairs, laughing. And he says, “You know the son of a bitch just didn’t want to die. But we got him. He got loose on the kill floor and they had to get a rifle before they could finally take him down.”
Sometimes at my book talks over the past few years, some of the old mustangers hobble on in. When I’m finished and the others have left, they approach me in tears. They have not come in with others, mind you, but alone; they are cowboys after all, lone rangers, and they look haunted. Yet there are shreds of pride; they are standing tall, still handsome, craggy, weathered by years of toiling in the natural world. They tell me that they have looked across the land and they see that the things and places they loved are gone. They are sorry for their role in the decimation of our herds, our heritage, and they fear that our greatest partner is on the way out. What can they do, they ask, I just wish there was something I could do.

Thank you Robert Redford. You have always been my FAVORITE actor and I had the pleasure of meeting you a long time ago at Sundance in Utah. Got your autograph on the menu with pic of you and Paul Newman from the movie ‘Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid’. Framed it before I got home (Nevada); this was over 35 years ago. Our wild horses and burro’s are being mismanaged to extinction by the BLM. The BLM is an embarrassment and always sides with the heartless, cruel, welfare ranchers. Our wild horses have the right to be on public lands; and should be protected and cared for. BLM – Stop the cruel, inhumane roundups; and stop stockpiling them into concentration-like holding pens, where they do not have any protection from the harsh environment, proper care and feed. The manner in which the government treats our wild horses and burro’s is an embarrassment; and is like a horror movie. Horse slaughter needs to end now; and the transportation of our horses to Canada and Mexico need to stop now. Love our wild horses!
