Pro-Horse Movement on a Roll

by R.T. Fitch ~ Author/President Wild Horse Freedom Federation

No News IS Good News

As all of you equine advocates are aware, the past several weeks have not been the best for our companion, four-legged friends, the American horse.  Between the roar of helicopter blades and the gavel of Congress there has been a full-scale war waged upon the benevolent friend of all Americans, the horse, but please take heart…we are NOT going away.  In fact, we are becoming more galvanized by the second, hence, the lack of a lot of news coming out of SFTHH.  We are busy.

There are a multitude of issues working, behind the scenes, right now.  The bulk of their respective successes depend upon funding so all of them will not be addressed in this outcry but Terry and I pledge to do our best to support all legitimate exercises as well as we can.  Today I would like to focus on two; even though Christmas looms over our collective heads there really has never been a better time to do the right thing than right now, so for the first time, you are going to hear me make a plea for funding, you have no idea how much this pains me.

1.)  In all fairness, I will speak to our organization first, the Wild Horse Freedom Federation.  We are a pending 501(c)3 org and any donations will be tax-deductible BUT we are standing on the brink of one of the most landmark cases against the U.S. government, on behalf of the wild horses, that has ever been put forward.  You all have heard of Laura Leigh as plaintiff in her “First Amendment” case that is being heard by the 9th circuit on January 9th, next month.  This case is a win/win for the wild horses and there is a great interest in the 9th Circuit on this case along with the associated press related agencies that have thrown their hats in the ring.  The BLM does NOT want you to know what they are doing with YOUR horses and we are going to make them pony-up.  It is getting intense and our legal staff is growing so that Laura’s two years of work does what it is supposed to do; make a difference.  This is landmark stuff, not the legal plagiarism that you have seen in the recent past from other Wild Horse organizations, this is pure gold from the very best animal, advocate attorneys in the land.

Our problem is that legal time equals money and as a whole, the few private parties involved cannot continue to carry the burden, we need your help.  Professional fundraising is only a few short weeks away but in the meantime we need to pay our lawyers so for the first time, you are going to hear me plead for help.  (help)

If you donate to WHFF’s legal fund it all goes to the legal fund, Terry and I have been picking up costs.  If you donate to the Field and Fuel fund it will all go to keeping Laura in the field doing what the attorneys want her to do, DOCUMENT.  We need help there, too.

Overall, we are bagging the entire idea of giving gifts to each other this year for Christmas in an effort to give the gift of life to the horses.  Again, I have never asked for money but if we are ever going to make a difference for the wild horses and burros, now is the time.  We are not your standard wild horse/burro group, we are litigators and through the tool of the Federal courts, we WILL make a difference.  Remember, Wild Horse Annie did it and we intend to make her proud so please, we need your help to be a part of history to make this happen.

2.)  A serious plug, here, for our good friends at Equine Welfare Alliance.  They are NOT sitting still over the horse slaughter issue and have a very clever plan put in place to rock the socks off from the horse-eaters.  But, like us, for the first time they are soliciting funds in an effort to make it happen.  So, being that all of you have a big heart; instead of buying that cup of five dollar coffee or that pack of cigarettes maybe it would do both your heart and soul some good to swing by their website and drop a few coins in their bucket.  EWA has been around for years and never solicited a dime but due to the lobbying efforts of a perverted minority and the progression of an agenda by a handful of sick individuals we need to help EWA build a war chest so that they can respond in like, not in a perverted fashion but all in the upper loop, make things happen.  Our government is not run by the will of the people but instead by the whim of the dollar and to succeed, we need to respond in kind.

So my apologies, here, but we need you help in fighting the good the fight in an effort to save the last of our remaining wild horses and burros.  We are transparent and totally above-board with every penny donated appreciated and accounted for.  But January 9th is looming and we need to get to work.  Please swing by WHFF and lend a hand…we thank you, in advance, for your support…as do the horses.

  1. I dont have alot but I will donate to both , I have donated WHFF before……and will again…..I will choose this to be my Christmas present to myself and all the horses I love so much! God bless you all for all you do!

  2. The Wild Mustang Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas on our public land
Not a Mustang was stirring, knowing what was at hand.
They huddled in fear hoping someone would care,
In hopes that the advocates soon would be there

The foals hid in cover while Mom stood her ground
While stallions and bachelors, made sure Abbey wasn’t around.
With Salazar lurking and Glenn so close by
The bands must stay quiet and not blink an eye
When out on the range there arose such a clatter
The Mustangs all knew, what was the matter.
They ran to take cover, on wings they did fly
For surely they knew, that many would die.

The visions of million$ caused Cattoor a big grin
While Gorey and Lesperance high-fived a big win
More horses removed by ignoring the law
Hold on to your hats and stand back in awe

The chopper did glisten on new fallen snow
Sealing the fate of the horses below.
When all of a sudden, the bands all stood still
And watched as the chopper came over the hill

They stood in amazement, can it really be true
The advocates appeared right out of the blue
The horses retreated, not believing their eyes
For surely this is another, BLM guise

Then leading the charge, lively and quick
Were Downer and Holland and Fitch with a stick
More rapid than lightening, Cindy followed in tow
With Long close behind, not sure which way to go

Now Ginger and Shelley and Laura times two,
Oh Valerie and Barbara and Julie it’s you.
Now Vicki and Jerry and right there is Ann
Now Terry and Makendra with cameras in hand

Down the hill they descended toward the horses with care
And watched as the chopper, fled into the air
The advocates came with injunction in hand
The decree shouted out, on our public lands

Enough is enough the judge did declare
the horses were saved by the breadth of a hair.
Our work here’s not done, the advocates cried
the choppers still flying, other herds could be spied

It’s back to D.C. with a permanent plan
to ensure all the horses could live on their land.
So love was delivered to the horses with pride
but the warriors must leave so that no more would die.

They climbed up the hill and turned back to the band
who all now had gathered on what was their land.
We carry you with us, Craig Downer did say
as we go to the White House to show them your way.

The horses all bowed with a sign of approval
as they all now knew that there was no removal.
They neighed and they nickered to the spirit above
Thanks for sending the people who gave us their love.

  3. Will share and Network R.T. Your needs are seriously important, as well as EWA!! We will do all we can here at our rescue to spread the word! Thank you for your diligence and dedication!

  4. Done.(donating) Mind if I re-post the poem on Hoofbeats (with credits?) It begs for a cartoon illustration to accompany it – I hope I can get pictures of everyone and get it drawn in a short amount of time.

  5. I donated $100.00 today. Wish I could do more. I’ve never donated to anything before. I also post as much as I can on Facebook. I hope it helps. Blessings.

  6. I sent Laura my 15 dollars and another 15 to Mr. Cowan. I know it isn’t much but then others need help too. I try to support Cloud and thenFreedom Fund horses. And I was able to send Jerry a few dollars for that mare he rescued last week. And there are still more.

My Aunt years ago taught me about giving. Up until I first Cloud I never donated. But I clearly remember watching her write many many checks for 10-15 dollars each to many different organizations that she believed in. I didn’t know it but she had been raised to give of herself–I would say this was also true of my dad cause she was his younger sister.

I know I’ll never be able to pay Mr. Cowan’s bill myself so I hope others will help me. We have a LONG LONG way to go to get this done. In the meantime all I can say is thank you Mr. Cowan for all you do for the horses. We will pay you all your fees. It may take the rest of my life but I pledge to always try to do my part.

I also pledge to help keep Laura in the field. My 15 dollars isn’t much on its own but I hope others will match my funds.

Baby Girl a horse in Florida whose story will warm your heart–her vet fees are just about paid off. She had a horrible injury to head left untended. Major major infection. Big open wound. She finally went in for hyperbaric chamber therapy. The change is UNBELIEVABLE! You can Beauty’s Haven on fb.

Need I say anything about Jerry Finch?

And then most of you know about The Cloud Foundation.

So there are where my discretion funds go to. It would be so easy if they were all combined somehow. You donate to one gigantic fund and then as needed different folks are able to withdraw funds as needed.

I know my funds aren’t the largest amount. I hope others can match mine or even exceed my donation. Together we can help the different organizations that we believe in. Whether they are a 501c3 or not–I think it’s more about what they do and how you feel that should inspire you to donate.

  7. “Our work here’s not done, the advocates cried
the choppers still flying, other herds could be spied …”
All my best to RT and Terry, Laura and Gordon, and the others out there making a difference!

  8. Sent Laura a Fuel gift of 100 a couple of days ago.. Funds are so tight with the prices of hay in Texas, but will send a bit to the legal fund in a few days. It does not seem like too many of the wealthy among us support these causes, and it is taking everything from Terri, and RT and Laura. If we can broaden the appeal, even if they can send a few dollars, we can raise enough. Share with the Night Before Christmas Poem.. maybe each will give $5 for a good SMILE.

  9. GIVE and let LIVE… RT, you have a true gift within your heart and you use it well, we are your friends and love the horses too. Be glad you have asked for help, thats what friends are for… we give to you with a smile. Thank you for all you do!

  10. I called today and left a message to call. I can do a donation of $20.00 per month. I wish that I could do more because the horses need us so much. I would like to thank Mr Cowan for his support because you could not do it without him. Sometimes it seems like an uphill battle. Thank God that we have such dedicated people out there who give of their time. I have a couple books that Wild Horse Annie wrote and never realized until recently how the Wild Horses and Burros have come under attack. Rt, I think that you have gotten the word so much better than any of the magazines, ect. If I can do more, I will certainly try. But don’t feel the need to apoligize for seeking funding. You all are the best.

  11. It means so much that we have been able to discuss all this about funds and keeping on… on a public site. We all veered away from it for so long… but there is no shame in this struggle. The opposition knows who we are and should also know we are not quitting but always gathering more strength and more sources of help which have kept us growing. We need to be proud of our efforts and increase them all we possibly can. Change is coming. Alternatives and growth will also come. Just believe and support and do not stop. This is gonna be a long dark winter. But before we enter into it we will have a celebration of light in honor of Wild Horse Annie and the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act on December 15th, an International Vigil on the date 40 years after its signing into law. I hope those who love the wild horses and burros will gain inspiration, determination and strength from this vigil that all of us are invited to participate in. Please light a candle for the wild ones who have died and suffered and been stolen off their lands.

Please say a prayer also for the Wild Horse and Burro Warrior, Christine Jubic, as she fights for her life in New York Sate. She has inspired and educated many of us and she, like Laura, sued BLM single handed on behalf of wild herds removed and lost in the dark hole of BLM mismanagement. My heart goes out to her and her family and all who love her. Chris, You are so appreciated!!

    • Mar, please tell me what is wrong with Chris J. ? She has been a warrior for years and has had a hard time too. Do you have her snail mail address so we cans end her cards ? I have her Email addy but she may not be well enoughto be online. God bless her.

      • Barb, This past summer Chris used a detox for Lyme Disease and it gave her a reaction. She went to her doctor and they found she has cancer. Cathy Ritlaw knows more than I do. But Chris discussed this openly at FB and one day she asked us if we thought she should do chemo and we all said ‘Yes!’ She did and it extended her life. But she has stopped posting there about mid Nov.

She is a wonderful Wild Horse (and Burro) Warrior and her blog is listed here at the right and I hope RT will leave it there always. I will light a candle for her on the 15th for the international Vigil for the 40th Anniversary of the signing of the WFRH&B Act. There should be some links up here for that…but I bet RT or someone will write a post.

        Chris’s 60 Birthday is December 20th….

  12. I will put up a donations basket at the Wild Horse & Burro Vigil next week and send in whatever is collected–maybe give out mini-carrots as a thank you. “Enough is enough” the judge did declare…..

  13. I think we need to win the lottery so maybe we should start playing. I have been tempted but don’t have money to waste.

  14. Thank you RT! We are “Grassroots,” and we always meet a challenge by upping the ante and doing the battle, blow for blow, measure for measure…tit for tat… ~ It has been frustrating when “no one is home” with our “advocacy.” Or we make gains that do not fully fill the gap…we fall through the cracks. And we all work so hard across the board in so many venues. For years & years! But now the time has come for an all-out from all sides. FINALLY! I always feel “everything happens for reason.” You could look at the pro-slaughter sociopathic slime as giving us a gift. Massive mobilization and full battle. I am heartened by what is happening and have full faith in what is going on behind the scenes with WHFF, Field and Fuel Fund, EWA . I will donate to all. Pro-slaughter has the BIG $$$$ and we now need to all pitch in. I am so sickened by the recent events in DC, with Wallis et all… Angry too. And anger gives me strength and determination to fight. For-The-Horses! TY ❤

  15. I have been on facebook since the law came back into affect (slaughter). People who own and love their horses have beeen advocates for the law. They feel it will save many horses from neglectfull owners and that slaughter is more humane than starvation. I have posted the video of the kill-buyer, and many comments and statements about horsemeat being tainted with bute and pesticides. But the AVMA, quarter horse association and even PETA condoning this law. I am truly frustrated no one wants to see or think of any positon but their own. I can say I have researched this and read and thought critically of both sides of the issue. It seems, as usuall, America is taking the “easy” way out. Easy that is for everyone but the horse. AVMA really made me angry by saying that slaughter is humane. I am so frustrated!!!

  16. RT..I really enjoy reading your articles and admire your dedication and compassion for our wild horses. You have my total support, as well as, EWA. To tell you the truth, I’ve also decided to put gifts on hold, because of the seriousness of what we’re facing, if we don’t prevail. Nothing in this world could make me happier, than the freedom of our wild ones. That alone would be the best Christmas gift, ever! Support is on the way….we MUST win!
