Protest Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s appointment of Callie Hendrickson to the BLM National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board[1] as the General Public Representative.
Background: Callie Hendrickson is the Executive Director of the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts representing ranching interests, many of whom have permits to run livestock on public lands in Northwestern Colorado. The organization successfully petitioned to become an intervenor on the side of BLM to completely remove the West Douglas Wild Horse Herd on the Western Slope of Colorado.

Ms. Hendrickson supports the sale without limitation of all unadopted wild horses to the highest bidder (including slaughter buyers).

Ms. Hendrickson will speak at the second pro-slaughter conference (Summit of the Horse) in Oklahoma City this spring.
Does Callie Hendrickson represent you? If your answer is NO, then please call, fax, and email Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and politely, but firmly ask that Callie Hendrickson’s appointment to the Advisory Board[1] be rescinded immediately.

[1] The BLM Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board recommends management strategies to the BLM. Hendrickson would join Jim Stephenson (appointed June 2011) on the Board. Stephenson openly advocates for horse slaughter. BLM has discussed killing wild horses in holding since at least 2008. With Hendrickson, they may have just the Board they want —a Board that could recommend to BLM that they dispose of the wild horses in holding.
[2] A recent nationwide poll reveals that 80% of Americans oppose the slaughter of U.S. horses for human consumption regardless of their gender, political affiliation, whether they live in an urban or rural area, or their geographic location. Further, it confirms that a vast majority of horse owners are also against the slaughtering of our nation’s equines. The survey was sponsored by the ASPCA and conducted by Lake Research Partners.

I have called this number several times yesterday and today , there is only a answering machine each and everytime you call that says they will call back ????? I have not received a return call as they claim they will do…Has anyone else had this problem ?????

Watching Houston animal cops , they are at a horse auction witch has pmu horses they are buying 25 horses, so kill buyers dont get them and are taking them to SPCA in Houston to find homes for them, they all have bad hoofs that need to be addressed……………………………………. WOW so happy they are there……and happy it was televised hope everyone sees it……………………………………

BrAVO Houston SPCA and the single donor who paid for the horses, there were 200 horses at this auction all were going to be bought buy kill buyers, BRAVO not one got bought by a kill buyer, there were other rescuers there who bought thew rest ……………………….

Called. was transferred to BLM comments, Spoke with agent there. Expressed my concerns over the appointment and demanded that a person who represented the general public’s view on horse slaughter be assigned in her stead. He took my name and phone number.

Enough is Enough! With 80% of Americans opposing horseslaughter, she certainly doesn’t represent the wishes of the American people, nor the humane treatment of our equines. This appointment must not be allowed to stand.

I emailed the other day and got this letter that said Callie was the best candidate and how balanced the board is suppose to be! GAG! I immediately responded and got a letter back telling me the person is out of the office until Tues?

I have had first hand experience with her of whom you speak. I had no idea I’d end up being connected to the official BLM BOUNCER woman. Geez. I expected to speak with a professional assistant in the Washington, D. C. office and got her instead.
Here is an idea that we might want to consider. Copying our Representative or Senator’s office. particularly if we have one with appropriations or other oversight responsibilities related to Natural Resources, Commerce, Interior, or Agriculture. At least, our elected officials will be informed.
Or we might consider copying the elected officials who have seemed most supportive of our efforts.
Those who called might want to send an email just letting their Congress members know that they called these numbers. We did announce our plans in advance, so Interior had a choice to make preparations. They were not ambushed. They could have responded by being on alert and having a few more people available to take calls and faxes, or they could do what it appears like some of them did, and become unavailable for a few days.

Got through and talked to a person who asked if I was calling about Ms. Hendrickson. He put me through to voice mail. Also sent an e-mail to Sec. Salazar and one to the President. Some day we’ll get the MSM to carry a positive message regarding the wishes of 80% of Americans and not the lies of the very few regarding horse slaughter.

Surprise surprise the fax won’t go through, the phone line went straight to voice mail, think the email went. Wrote a letter and snail mailed & cc’d the whitehouse. If they appoint this hater to speak on our behalf it confirms my belief that justice is dead.

Maybe while we are busy writing letters and calling … we could include contacting the Missouri Governor Jay Nixon FAX 573-751-1588 and the Missouri Director of Tourism directormotourism@ded.mo.gov and the Mountain Grove Chamber of Commerce chamber@mountaingrovechamber.com to let them know that they will be very sorry if they allow the horse slaughter plant to come to their town/state. Perhaps share with them a portion of Mayor Bacon’s letter and/or your own thoughts. I understand that this Mountain Grove horse slaughter plant is only about a 3 hour drive from most of our long term holding facilities … isn’t that handy!

I called and the sec at Salazar’s office said because of the volume of calls they had to set up a special phone line at the BLM office. So I was transferred there where I was asked for my phone and name… as if are they going to call all of us back? She said she cannot take a comment now.
But at least Salazar’s secretary said there was such a heavy volume of calls!! Keep up the great work calling, faxing! 🙂

Sounds like there was some attempt by the Secretary’s office to plan for this. This is a good sign. Too bad that someone in the BLM office missed the memo about changing its spots.

Just as an FYI I have posted this article several times on Ken Salazar’s Facebook page, you can’t actually POST but you can COMMENT. Even if the topic is not related it can be seen…recommend that we make a stand, there, too…as I will be blocked very soon I imagine.

I made 28 calls today and one stands out in my mind , it was the one I ,made to Kathy Burkes office in Ill. the lady who answered was very gracious, she also expressed her opposition .she remembers Cavel…… She is horrified by the whole scenario…………… she has a passion for the horses………..Talked for 20 mins… on the entire subject. she will convey our entire conversation to Kathy Burke
