EWA and Angel Acres say “In Your Face” Horse Slaughter Supporting AQHA

by R.T. Fitch ~ President of the Wild Horse Freedom Federation

Pro-Horse Billboard is in AQHA’s Backyard

The Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA) has planted a eye-catching billboard graphically saying “Stop Slaughtering Us” with two companion horses pictured on Texas Interstate 40 just a stone’s through away from the slaughter promoting AQHA’s Museum in Amarillo, Texas.  EWA funded the installation which is part of a national network of public awareness billboards promoting the well being of American equines from the onslaught of predatory horse slaughter perpetuated and promoted by such organizations as the American Quarter Horse AssociationAngel Acres has been the organizer of the network and has multiple billboards posted around the country in locations that could possibly make a difference in alerting the public to the subversive and collusive activities of a handful of politicians, organizations and individuals who wish to bring the bloody business of horse slaughter back to the U.S. so that foreign business’s can profit from butchering and then dining upon the drug laced flesh of American equines.  The billboard guides motorists to the pro-horse websites of www.equinewelfarealliance.org and www.stopslaughteringus.com

“We wanted to ensure that the AQHA received the message loud and clear,” stated EWA’s VP Vicki Tobin, “and we think we found the perfect vehicle with the billboard right in their backyard.”

EWA’s statistics and reports indicate that over 100,000 U.S. horses are shipped annualy to both Mexico and Canada to be cruelly slaughtered for human consumption abroad.  There have been no horse slaughter plants operating in the U.S. since the last three foreign owned operations were shuttered in 2007 when USDA funding for inspectors was removed.  But last November President Obama reinstated the additional funding into the USDA budget after it was covertly slipped into an Ag appropriations bill by 3 collusive Congressmen behind closed doors.  The bloody and reprehensible practice of slaughtering companion animals could, theoretically, return to U.S. in the form of foreign business ventures.

Tobin continued, “We expect to take heat from the anti-horse side about spending money on a billboard versus a donation to a direct rescue but we are in a fight to save hundreds of thousands of horses and trust our affiliated equine rescues to save the horse next door.  Like our “Sgt. Reckless” campaign the Alliance recognizes the bigger picture and the need to stop this insanity once and for all.”

Jo Deibel, Founder and Director of Angel Acres, noted “This billboard is another step forward in raising awareness about horse slaughter. The vast majority of Americans are unaware that our horses are being sent to Mexico and Canada to be brutally slaughtered. No matter what pro slaughter folks call it i.e. rendering, processing, harvesting or whatever sanitized word they choose to use, horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia.

The national network of billboards has been received with positive press from across the U.S. and Angel Acres hopes to garner more sponsors so that the message to the public can continue to expand.

  1. So many Americans adamantly disagree with horse slaughter AND with allowing horses to be shipped across the borders for slaughter. WHY CANT THIS BE STOPPED ONCE AND FOR ALL?

  2. It makes me sick to think that we have to spend valuable resources to stop this from happening in our country again. These funds could have been used for solutions rather than a fight for all of our equine friends lives. Total dregs of society they are…We cannot let our horses, ponies, burros and other equines pay the price. Let the Force of the Horse be with you all as we take on this fight!

    • Spending money on these billboards vs. giving the money directly to horse rescue in this case is important. People who wouldn’t othwise know about horse slaughter will now know thanks to you. This is a very important message.

  3. Its a good day for Illinois…I just got off the phone with Rep. Sacia’s office and I was told HB 5382 has died in committee. So all the calls made to our Illinois Legislators has paid off. I’m sure further information will be forcoming…A bill that has died in committee is not taken to the floor for the entire house vote. So again, let the Force of the Horse be with us all as we continue to strive to get the final legislation passed in Washington, D.C.

  4. I said somewhere else that I wish this billboard or a replica of it was posted in AQHA’s lobby. Maybe if they had to trip over it they would start to get it.

  5. Perhaps spend less money on billboards and send that money to the rescue operations so that they are able to rescue the horses from auctions. Individuals should start by getting a horse from a rescue. If you are against horse slaughter and haven’t ever rescued one or have bred a horse in your backyard, well then “if your not part of the solution, your part of the problem”. If there were no “unwanted” horses, there would be no work for the slaughter houses.

  6. We need a bilboard in every state that supports slaughter…This includes near any large airports so everyone can see their intent. Other businesses take a dim view of these barbarious acts of
cruelty and usally do not want to locate there.

  7. The people in Missouri need to be made aware, also. The slaughter plant that “they” intend to start there is within hours of one of the BLM long-term holding facilities. How convenient

Mountain Grove citizens need to know what they’re in for if they allow a slaughter plant anywhere near their community:

    Dear State Legislator:
You will soon be asked to vote on … legislation regarding the commercial slaughter of American horses of which you probably have very little firsthand knowledge. No doubt you have heard from lobbyists and organizations who want you to support the practice, but before you do, you should ask yourself why the residents of Texas and Illinois worked so hard to rid their states of their horse slaughter plants. The answer may surprise you.

  9. Angel Acres and EWA, I applaud you. I am a firm believer that (1) All race tracks, the race horse owners, and the trainers need to deposit at least ten percent (10%) of their winnings into a fund for giving a race horse after their racing days are over, a new home to get them ready for going into a loving, caring home. In addition, an additional amount, at least $2.00, should be paid at the racing gate entrance to also go into this fund. AND, if any TRAINER, OR OWNER OF A RACING HORSE, IS SHOWN TO HAVE ANY PART OF AN EX RACING HORSE GOING TO SLAUGHTER, HE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TRAIN OR RACE ANOTHER HORSE IN HIS LIFETIME. This madness has to stop. IF we can stop the race horses from ending up there, we can then go after the auction houses, the killer buyers, and the attentional attention on the hideous BLM and Salazar and his cronies. God BLess you Jo Deibel and the EWA. Good job and hope we can find more billboards across the U.S. Would any billboard company be willing to donate billboards as a tax writeoff to the Angel Acres for this endeavor. This is important, yes we could use it to save additional horses, but this action might save more in the long run. Also, if only someone would donate a hay growing farm to our equine rescues to get hay at a great savings would be great. Gosh, I wish I had a hay farm — none of my hay would be exported — it would stay in the U.S. for our beautiful U.S. horses and donkeys. You guys are amazing, keep up the good work.

      • Arlene: Yes, we do think alike. It’s too bad you live, I think you said Ohio, and I in Southern California. Great things come from great minds and all of us together can make a big difference in arriving at the end result —– NO MORE SLAUGHTERHOUSES IN THE U.S., NO MORE TRANSPORTING OUR HORSES ACROSS U.S. BORDERS, AND. NO MORE AUCTION HOUSES SELLING HORSES TO KILLER BUYERS. And, I think all killer buyers should be published in papers so they will be ostrisized(s) by the American public. A good punishment for them. They don’t deserve anything better, in fact, they deserve much worse.

  13. Thank you R.T for the article and a big thank you to EWA and Angel Acres for bringing this to the public’s attention. All the more reason you deserve our support, in helping to protect our equines from this tragedy. It’s really sad we’re in such a position, in having to do so. Our voice now, or lack of, will determine their future.

  14. Something else is happening, here. The Best of the Best are coming into this battle. Most of us came because of our Wild Horses and Burros, but as we have seen, the scope of this goes far beyond and reaches much further than we knew. Perhaps that is why “they” are in such a hurry? They hope to get escape before the Posse catches them.
